Philenie Says Sorry

Original Title: Phileine zegt sorry

Director: Robert Jan Westdijk

Language: In Dutch with English subtitles

Starring: Kim van Kooten, Michiel Huisman

Screening: 2005-08-02

A Dutch romantic comedy?Sounds refreshing.

Philenie's actor boyfriend dreams of making it big in New York,
so he persuades her to let him off for a year while he pursues his
career in the big bad foreign metropolis — tell the same thing
to your partner, you might just get one big, tight slap. I've just
used "big?for the third time in the same paragraph, and I wonder
what's bored, ops, wrong with me.

But anyway, being the super-bitch that she is, Philenie (a spunky
van Kooten) trails him to New York where she encounters more misadventures
than she can handle. The film redeems its clichs with a nice character
development in Philenie, from a self-absorbed brat to a person who
has learnt the lessons of compromise. Not intending to be a spoiler,
but there's an interesting scene in the film where Philenie discovers
her boyfriend performing in an, ahem, experimental play: think Romeo
and Juliet
with influences of Deep Throat.

This Scandinavian fare is worth a look.
