Perhaps Love

Original Title: Ru Guo Ai

Director: Peter Chan

Language: Mandarin with English subtitles

Starring: Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Xun, Jacky Cheung, Ji Jin Hee

Screening: 2005-12-06

Peter Chan is one of Hong Kong's most talented directors. But after
his beautiful 1996 hit, Comrades: Almost A Love Story,
he has mostly focused his efforts on producing good films like The
Eye
and Golden Chicken.

Finally returning to the director's chair, his new film is a movie-within-a-movie
that stars some of East Asia's biggest actors, including Jacky Cheung
(Hong Kong), Takeshi Kaneshiro (Taiwan/Japan), Zhou Xun (China)
and Ji Jin-Hee (South Korea).

Takeshi plays a film actor who is obsessed with a film actress
(Zhou). At the same time, they are also both starring in a musical
that's being directed by her lover (Jacky). Scenes from the movie
that they are shooting soon become intertwined with their real lives.

Perhaps Love is ambitious and complex in structure. Some
of its musical numbers are extravagantly staged and choreographed.
All three actors provide their own vocals to the songs, though Takeshi
is clearly a weak singer and should have been dubbed. Still, the
movie is a spectacular return to form for director Peter Chan, and
a must-see for all arthouse lovers.
