American Idol's acid-tongued judge Simon Cowell must be so pleased. For the second time in a row, Hugh Grant is playing a character inspired by him in a Hollywood film.
After his role as the sarcastic British judge in last year's American Dreamz, Hugh Grant now plies his charm in Music and Lyrics as an ex-member of a 1980s British pop group. Living in New York, the has-been is trying to revive his career by getting involved in a reality TV show along together with other has-beens such as Debbie Gibson and REO Speedwagon.
Hugh is offered a lot of money to compose a hit song for a newly-minted pop princess (Hayley Bennett). But though he can think up a tune, he cannot quite come up with the right lyrics until a chance meeting with a professional plant doctor (Drew Barrymore) with a knack for writing snappy lyrics. The two decide to collaborate and, of course, they fall in love.
Music and Lyrics offers nothing new in the romantic comedy genre. But it is sweet, funny and likeable enough to take your date to.
