Serena Williams's new French ride!

French Open 2008 fever is now on. If tennis powerhouse Serena Williams needed a new ride around in Paris and her top priority is to make her LOOK more fashionable; what would Fridae Auto club recommend?

The Peugeot 207 CC certainly ranks high on the list of possibilities as it resembles the American tennis legend. Note the car's features: big grille (mouth), huge headlamps (fierce determined eyes), chromed fog lights (bling bling earings), curvy roof (full-figuredness) and a perky bulging rear end (hips) all closely mimicking Serena's attributes. These are beauty aesthetics that makes Serena attractive, or so I assume.

Amercian Serena Williams (above) will face Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik at the third- round match at the French Open on Friday.
Driving the 207 CC 1.6 A does not require much of Serena's incredible on-court powers, as the steering is light but crisp, especially at parking speeds. While its lightness might not thrill me, I am pleased to inform you folks that the 207 CC steers with the accuracy that the Williams forehand lacks.

Grunt is so important for tennis supremacy these days. The 1.6 litre VVT engine used on the 207 CC is collaboration between the PSA Peugeot Citroen group and BMW. Modern valve trickery engine management has brought Peugeot's petrol engine right bang up to date. Strong and revvy throughout the rev range, the 120 horsepower VVT engine on the 207 CC is willing, just like Serena's grunt on court - a battle cry worthy of a roman warrior. Considering the 207 CC being close to 1 and a half tonne, the 1.6 litre engine has done a fabulous job.

The Porsche developed tiptronic four-speed automatic gearbox is much improved and faster compared to the 206s and 307s which I had tested years ago. The gearbox on the 207 CC does the job just fine despite sounding dangerously old school.

Some bad news for Serena: despite of the rainy weather in Paris, she might still prefer to have the roof of the 207 CC open as a closed roof means having to endure a slightly knobbier ride. Considering the huge 17 inchs alloys the test car was wearing, the car rides better with the roof retracted.

Helping Serena in her 2008 French Campaign as she rides in her 207 CC is touch. Touch the interior of the 207 CC and you would know how hard the French engineers had worked on improving aesthetics/perceived quality of their cars. The chic French 207 CC has a lovely interior to help Serena relax after a gruesome match. She will also need not waste anytime figuring out the controls in the 207 CC as everything in the cabin is logical and ergonomically sound.

I would assume the Williams entourage would have other vehicles for their French conquest, as Serena would need help with all her tennis gear. The Peugeot will be challenged to hold that much gear in the boot, especially during when the roof is stowed away.

Speaking of roof, wouldn't this year's rain washed out days at the French Open be avoided if they had bothered with a retractable roof? The French 207 CC persists with a two-piece roof formula despite other manufacturers launching three, four and even five pieces roofs on their coupe-cabriolets. The predecessor of the 207 CC, the 206 CC would threaten to break Serena's Channel red nails every time she attempts to open the roof (a pair of latches needs some hand job before the roof can open). The new 207 CC's fully automated roof is a blessing for Serena's long fragile looking claws!

Should Serena have any friends supporting her at the match, they had better find some alternative mode of transportation as the Peugeot 207 CC's rear seats are more suited to transport tennis bags and other gear.

The 207 CC 's huge improvements over the 206 CC is obvious and will be appreciated. Serena will be happy with a new Pug 207 CC, will you?

is there enough leg room for Serena?

how about if I am in the back seat behind both sisters?

OMG CARS are so expensive in Singaore! that would sell in the EU for half the price . . . yikes! but perfect car for my kept lover boy . ..

its more like a third of SG prices... but french technology is not what you wld go for here, if you are honest: spongy drive-line chassis, quality of interior finishings is mediocre and petrol consumption and CO2 emissions are high, compared to more refined examples.

Think this article has just jinxed poor Serena...she lost so badly!

Anyways, car prices are indeed MAD in SG! But still one can just be amazed by the number of cars on our roads.

The 207 CC is not that bad...think hard folks..at this price and class, can u think of any other credible rival?

the Daihatsu Copen ... thats 40% cheaper and has a teeth chattering ride

The Opel Tigra has a HORRID interior and nasty drivetrain!

Hence...dont u guys think the Pug 207CC has the entire market of small Coupe-Convertible to themselves?

To Terrificturk,

Before you slam the 207cc, why dun you go test drive it first and check out the interior finishings.

I owned both the 207cc and soon the BMW 120i and i can confidently say that the full-leather trimmings in the 207cc does not pale in comparison to the german marque.

Maybe cos the beemer is the 1 series, but it's still a heftier 50 grand more expensive than my pug.

cheers

I have driven the Peugeots as rental cars more than once and i stand by my notes. The driving quality is nothing compared to - as you do - a BMW. The mere attempet to compare them is ludicrous - and I am not even starting to discuss crash safety, where the 206/207 have nothing to shout about! And 'soon' to own means you have yet to experience truly refined engineering! But of course, green aspects count for nothing in Asia and SG is not an exception here, sadly. Though it's nice to note that the 1 series is now also selling there, the 1 series cabriolet is a mega-seller here - also because of its much superior quality in both engineering and driving quality but also for its green credentials.

CO2 emissions are no big deal, but if anyone really cares, Peugeot's fleet is better than BMW's. The 207 uses BMW-developed engines btw...

That said, I personally prefer real convertibles with a textile roof - or real coups.

You just look a lot better in a real convertible... :)

I had never quite understood the point of a coupe.

Always prefered a convertible or even a CC is good! Hence a AUDI TT Roadster will do juz fine for now!

CO2 emissions are impt to some countries, particulary UK, where cars are taxed based on their level of CO2 emissions. 120g/km is the magic mark!

The 207 CC's VVT engine's block came from Pug...with those fancy engine mgmt bits from BMW
