Taipei by the river: plan a short ride from Dadaocheng

An evergreen plan for a short riverside ride, a stop on foot and the rental questions worth settling at the wharf.

Dihua Street and Xiahai City God Temple are two reasons to leave time off the bike when planning a ride from Dadaocheng Wharf. Taipei’s official bikeway guide includes both among the cultural stops along a route through the riverside parks. Pick one to visit on foot, then work the cycling around it.

The municipal rental directory puts Dadaocheng’s station on the south side of the wharf, at the end of Minsheng West Road. Ask the staff two questions before paying: when is the bike due back, and can you leave it at another station? A map showing several rental points does not answer the second question. Check the price, deposit and identification requirements there too.

Heading out with your same-sex partner? Try the bikes separately before deciding on a tandem. You may want different sizes, or simply prefer steering your own. Agree on a place to turn back while you are still at the wharf. The same arrangement works for a group of friends with different levels of enthusiasm for cycling.

Yanping Riverside Park’s visitor page gives you a place to begin choosing your stretch of river. Use the agreed return time to choose how far to go. Allow for the ride back as well as stops. Bring water and a helmet, and look up the forecast and any riverside access notices before leaving. Although the park is listed as open around the clock, that tells you little about a rental counter’s hours or whether a particular entrance is accessible that day.

Have a favourite stop near Dadaocheng? A recommendation with a reason to pause there would help someone planning this trip. Return the bikes before heading into the neighbourhood, and give the walking part of the afternoon its own time.
