One person, one half. One half of passion and struggle. One half of faith and belief. One half of joy and sorrow. One half of love and sacrifice. Two halves, One sisterhood, Forever.
In the Chinese Seventh Lunar month, we commune with visiting ancestors in song and dance. Big Papaya and Little Papaya are dreaming to rule the Getai (Street Variety Show). As the Papaya sisters appeal to the illustrious Goddess of Getai for this elusive gift, blessings are made, sacrifices accepted, and temptations abound. The Papaya sisters receive “feel”, and learn to feel: gratitude and forbidden love; most preciously, a devotion to a sisterhood of halves. Their coming success on Getai is threatened by the entrance of the Angmoh Durian Sisters, a challenge is committed to find out who is the winning pair of songbirds in this scaffolding cage of ironies.
The ‘getai’ – a street variety show associated with the Hungry Ghost Festival – is an unabashedly colourful, boisterous and electrifying live showcase of song, dance and entertainment. 881 The Musical takes audiences on an unforgettable journey peppered with a heady mix of passion, sorrow, and joy through the lives of the Papaya sisters who dream to rule the ‘getai’ circuit with assistance from an intriguing celestial being!
This blockbuster musical sung in Mandarin and Hokkien (with English surtitles) will feature a magical combination of irresistible music, meaningful lyrics, superb choreography and eye-popping costumes – all set against a ‘getai’ of course. This is the first time a local movie has been adapted for the stage.
Adapted and directed by award-winning Singaporean playwright and director Goh Boon Teck, 881 The Musical remains true to the spirit of the top grossing film in 2007 by Singaporean director Royston Tan. Bringing this wonderful story to life is an outstanding 20-member cast that includes Joanna Dong, Judee Tan, Nat Ho, Sebastian Tan, Dennis Chew, Audrey Luo, Zachary Goh, Kluane Saunders and Rayann Condy.
From top grossing film by Royston Tan to spectacular musical extravaganza, this whirlwind ‘getai’ adventure of friendship, sisterhood and love is set to electrify the stage!
