1,000 at anti-LGBT rally in Kuala Lumpur

Over 1,000 people joined an anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rally last Saturday.

Some 1,000 to 3,000 people – according to various media reports – are said to have turned up last Saturday afternoon at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) campus just outside of Kuala Lumpur to protest "free sex and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) practices," to quote the Malaysian New Straits Times.

The independent Malaysiakini news website which put the number at 1,000 reported:

The rally, organised by Jaringan Melayu Malaysia [JMM, or Coalition of Malaysian Malays] and joined by several other groups such as the pro-establishment student group Aspirasi Mahasiswa, has singled out several politicians, activists and organisations to bear the brunt of their criticism for supporting free sex and LGBT.

"Reject Free Sex, Reject Bisexual Leader", "Gay and Bisex, Mad Dog Disease", "Bar Council Out of Mind", read some of the banners strung up in the stadium.

The organiser also distributed anti-LGBT flyers and posters slamming national laureate Abdul Samad Said, popularly known as Pak Samad, and Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenavesan for allegedly rallying behind the LGBT movement.

According to the New Straits Times, the rally was also attended by students from eight institutions of higher learning as well as supporters of 18 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) including Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (Federation of Malay Student's Union), Warisan Melayu (Malay Heritage). Like JMM, the latter two groups are regarded to be nationalist groups.

JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah was qupted as saying that the turnout at the two-hour rally was very encouraging. "The rousing applause and the cheering during the speeches clearly indicate that they are against LGBT."

He said although every individual had freedom of expression, Malaysia could never accept LGBT and free sex culture. "Through this peaceful assembly, we hope our voices will be heard that such practices should not be condoned, let alone by prominent figures in the country."

Other speakers reportedly lashed out at opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, former Bar Council president Datuk S. Ambiga and national laureate A. Samad Said for supporting the LGBT community. Ambiga is also the head of Bersih 2.0, a citizen’s movement for free and fair elections, that saw over 20,000 people demonstrate in Kuala Lumpur on 9 July 2011. The Bersih 3.0 demonstration planned for Saturday.

Malaysia's only sexuality rights festival Seksualiti Merdeka, which has been running largely without problems since 2008 with the support of numerous local and international organisations including the Malaysian Bar Council and other local human rights NGOs, was forcibly cancelled by the police last November.

It begs the question in many minds whether one should do biz or go to Malaysia for vacation etc. The statements I have read from this clown, the culture minister or whatever he is, saying 1/3 of Malaysians are gay was it? Hell they discriminate against the Chinese, non Muslims, and others, in public sector employment. They have no freedom.

3. 2012-04-23 20:16
burn it!! but im still a gay.. so watch out DEMONstrators, your child(s) maybe one of US.

Facts

1) 1000-3000 people out of 25~26million of Malaysian population is but a drop in the ocean. On the positive side, we can be happy that we only have a small bunch of narrow minded people. people who equate LGBT to free sex. On the other hand, these people should look at their numbers and ask why there are only so few people interested in their cause.

2) LGBT does not equate to free sex. Free sex could be part of it but who are we kidding ? They dont exist in hetero world ? Straight men and women dont have free sex ? I believe prostitution serves the hetero clientele more than us, correct ? Or perhaps we have another more holier than thou term for free sex in hetero human ?

"Reject Free Sex, Reject Bisexual Leader", "Gay and Bisex, Mad Dog Disease"

This is politically motivated... reject bisexual leader Anwar Ibrahim but accept murderer and totally corrupt leader like Malaysia's PM?

The malaysian government allows rallies to deprive the rights of the minorities whilst they fight for the rights of the majority! Can you see how perverted the current government...
6. 2012-04-23 21:10
I agree to reject free sex but not to reject LGBT....being LGBT is something they have never planned. to all my LGBT friends we must show to the world that being LGBT doesnt turn us into LOSER ....
7. 2012-04-23 21:53
hahhaaa.... I wish someone has times to follow these anti-LGBT's personal activities. Likely, all of them are gay themselves. Either that their dicks have failed to function years earlier.
8. 2012-04-23 22:07
they should pray hard and at least hope that their descendants and immediate children are not born this way~
9. 2012-04-23 22:18
I just stay at Kuala Lumpur these days. It is nice to hear this news. Cheer up, we are gonna make it by ourselves.

Good God how stupid are all these fucking assholes! I am just so glad I left this country and do not need to deal with backwards ignorant and probably closeted gays.... This puts back LGBT Malaysians a thousand years!
15. 2012-04-24 00:01
Sad day / date indeed the 31st of August 1957 was for Malaya / Malaysia. If that day / date be could be relived , I wonder whether lesbians ,gays , bisexuals and transgenders of Malaysia would advocate for independence from Great Britain ?
16. 2012-04-24 00:31
Retard! they are so ignorant!
17. 2012-04-24 00:31
Those DEMONstrators are sick and have nothing better to protest. They should look into their own backyard on incests, drugs and illegal motor racing!

Apart from this, Malaysian government always claim something that's absolutely not theirs and make it as their proud way. Even a rendang, that indonesian dishes, they claim its malaysian food. And even the balinese dance and the java tradition they claim it is malaysian.

And to see this, ew.. So sorry for malaysian. I never know how stupid ignorant, and moron is these people.
I live in Indonesia, no matter how annoying is the muslim group and the terrorist, which actually they're mostly malaysian, we all actually peace and open.
21. 2012-04-24 01:29
Malaysia's economy and politic are falling apart and they are spending time doing this?
22. 2012-04-24 01:39
In the video, those dark skin people were clearly uneducated and lower-class, they stupidly demonstrated igorance without values and perspectives.
23. 2012-04-24 01:47
Are those psychos completely and utter insane or something? LGBT doesn't mean free sex, and seems straight group is purely clean? That's really a pathetic excuse to anti LGBT.
24. 2012-04-24 01:52
#21:
Those freaks are only paying attention, wasting resources and focusing on doing the sorts of ridiculous activities, that's why Malaysia's economy are basically controlled in Chinese and other foreigners' hands.

#6 said: "I agree to reject free sex but not to reject LGBT".

I DON'T agree to reject free sex!

1. I don't know what 'free sex' means.
2. If it means group sex, I don't practice it.
3. HOWEVER, I want to claim the right to practice it if I wanted to.

Simple as that.
26. 2012-04-24 03:58
Go Go Go fellas!
27. 2012-04-24 04:48
stinking backward Malaysia is gg down the f***ing drain and rightly so!

I will pull all of my biz activities out and will not entertain any future requests.

#25:

I agree to reject free sex.

I personally think the meaning of "free sex" might be too easily having sex with strangers(for instant, one night stand) without serious considerations and discreet attitudes.

And those LGBT who are frequently doing sexual promiscuity also need to introspect themselves, because LGBT's image is ruined by their unresponsible and frivolous actions.

But if they like to do, just keep doing, that is also their "RIGHT".
29. 2012-04-24 07:49
the blamed Jewish, chinese and Ambiga....obviously its politically motivated. oh..take a look at the president of JMM towards the end of the video, is your gaydar beeping like mine as well? Its seldom wrong...:)

They protest against there sons and daughters brothers and sisters?? Nazis.
32. 2012-04-24 09:18
Fortunately they have the right to assemble and rant. We wouldn't them denied the the right to make fools of themselves in public. However 1 - 3 thousand? Not many. No doubt there would be greater attendance at a football game.
33. 2012-04-24 09:38
Bunch of extremists. Expressing their restricted thinking and voice. How smart can a person be if one just follow a book says.

hindu don't eat beef, bcos they treat cow as god; islam don't eat pork, same logic?

if yes, their actions show...

Well, not long ago..our country's censorship board banned a ballet troop to perform "The Nutcracker" here. Later, the reason was told because of the "tutu" the performers wear....

Now, you got the picture how pervert mind and no culture these people can be

I went to Malaysia for a holiday a few years ago. I hated the vibe of the place so much in KL that I bailed and flew to Thailand for the rest of my trip. Much nicer there.

This video makes my blood boil. Religion is a HOAX. This is NOT love but just a bunch of brainwashed goons.

KARMA IS A BITCH, GUISE. Wait for it.
40. 2012-04-24 23:10
Religion is an invention by man. And God is greater than one man-made religion I'm sure. God may transcend alien generations, no?

I cannot see where the 'All good and evil is decreed by Allah' is by such extremist actions. Where's the tolerance and how do they think they can help those who are? By fear and violence?

If their beliefs of 'life after death is eternal and one will be rewarded with either Heaven or Hell depending on how the life of this earth was spent', those who turned up to support such judgmental cause aren't very wise are they?
41. 2012-04-25 01:38
Do you think anyone went to the rally because he likes spending time with his cute friend?
42. 2012-04-25 01:39
Indeed it's unfortunate to hear narrow minded people make their statement. But as some people say it's only a small fraction of the population. Since each country has its share of extreme right movements or ultra conservative / religious groups (etc...), it's better and wiser not pay too much attention to them. The more we show our indignation, the more power we give to them. If we fight them, we go down to their level.
Better focus on the people with positive and open mind. Don't you think?
43. 2012-04-25 01:58
Malaysia... I spent 2 weeks travelling through it in 2010 and I have to say I thought the people were rather lovely. I was amazed at how well the Malay's, Indian and Chinese communities live together. Understandably racial tensions are there but that is a problem every country has but in the big picture I think it works well.
I'm sure that malaysian ppl as well in general are not that close minded and are open to other people's believes, orientations etc. It's a small minority that is still living in the past i'm sure. I did not listen to the video but it looks that whilst flick through it some of the people are just there because of others or bystanders and would probably have a complete different opinion if they had a gay friend / family or colleague.
I don't think / agree that it's neccassarily a problem that muslim's have with gay people I think that in general it's down to the individual and how they have experienced life.

For my part I can't wait to visit Malayisa again some day and hope that Malaysia will become more and more tolerant until nobody see's the need anymore to protest for such a lame cause. Rasiscm / Intolerance is becoming less and less around the world. Time to concentrate on more important things poverty, female discrimination etc etc.

BE PROUD !!!
44. 2012-04-25 02:42
well, these small portions of people don't represent entire population opinion toward gayhood, and beside, i believe most of them are our own fellow (pathetic) brothers...!!!! come on, homophobers are (closet) gay lah :)
45. 2012-04-25 04:34
and 30% of those attended are also gay or lesbian, some are bisexual, according to the malaysian study. but i think, all of them should be sent to some shock theraphy.. and emerge impotent. most of their race is sick, distorted and barbaric.
46. 2012-04-25 09:34
No need to curse these ppl... No need to waste our time.

Rally or not, they can never deny that WE will always exist and we are proud of ourselves.
47. 2012-04-25 12:36
When the time comes for protest against straights and free sex, that'll be the day! hahaha! This is a joke just as bad as going against gay and free sex. Take it easy fellas, just excell in your own fields and you will have served gays and straights, black and white, Christians and Muslims all alike.
48. 2012-04-25 13:58
Not many people showed up, as someone has pointed out!

No matter what the topic is, there'll always be a bunch out with their flags, signs and pickets to protest - small minded and bored people!

49. 2012-04-25 17:22
Thank goodness. it is small number but perhaps it is just the tip of an iceberg?

Then again, until how many osama only considered as majority? until taliban formed? that time our female only need to hide in d household.
50. 2012-04-25 17:42
As a non-Malay speaker, I would love to read an English translation, just so I could see what hate these people were peddling!

Malaysian LGBT rights activists warn against joining 'smear campaign' parade

Activists suspect a fake LGBT rights march is being publicised to 'demonise' anti-government campaigners
25 April 2012 | By Anna Leach

LGBT rights activists in Malaysia have warned that an 'LGBT not criminals' public parade was not organised by them and might be a fake march publicised as part of a smear campaign from government supporters.

The organisers of Seksualiti Merdeka, the sexual minorities festival that was banned in Malaysia last year, have warned their supporters not attend a parade apparently planned for this Friday.

Pang Khee Teik said on Facebook:

'PLEASE BE INFORMED that a supposed public parade "LGBT Bukan Penjenayah" [LGBT Not Criminals] outside the Bar Council this Fri 27 Apr is NOT organised by Seksualiti Merdeka, nor do we have any knowledge about it. It might be part of the continued smear campaign to make SM appear arrogant and defiant… and to rile up conservatives to think that Malaysia's burgeoning liberalism is a doorway to decadence… We advise you don't go.'

A heightening anti-LGBT hysteria, evident at a homophobic rally at a university last Saturday, has been attributed to a smear campaign connecting opposition leaders to LGBT rights.

At Saturday's rally speakers ranted angrily against leader of the opposition Anwar Ibrahim, as well as former president of the Malaysian Bar Council Ambiga Sreenevasan and acclaimed Malaysian writer A Samad Said, who both support the anti-corruption demonstrations, Bersih [clean in Malay]. A Bersih demonstration is planned for this Saturday and government supporters may be trying to detract attention from that.

The party that has ruled Malaysia since independence in 1957 has reason to be nervous that the general election, rumoured to be held in June, will not go well for them. They lost their two-thirds majority in the 2008 general election and the Bersih anti-corruption demonstrations have been popular.

Jerome Kugan, another Seksualiti Merdeka organiser, told Gay Star News:

'Basically they're out to demonise us… The discourse that JMM [organisers of the anti-LGT rally] is waging in the media at the moment is being focused very much on what they perceive to be the LGBT community's tall poppy syndrome, that we're becoming too brazen and asking for too much.

'So to have photos of us LGBTs in the media protesting would be exactly what they're looking for, especially as almost all the Malaysian media are either against the LGBT cause or have been ordered by the Malaysian Home Ministry to only print negative reports about LGBT issues. Those of us in NGOs working with human rights issues recognise this as fear-mongering smear strategies that have been used by the government many times previously.'

Pang published a post on the Seksualiti Merdeka blog today describing Malaysia's 'perverted justice'. He said:

'When the speaker at the Anti-LGBT rally talked about killing whoever he imagined are “the enemy of this land”, and by enemy he implied those who advocate for the human rights of LGBTs, the authorities looked the other way. But when Seksualiti Merdeka appealed for understanding, compassion and equality, it was deemed a threat to the national security and was banned by the police.'

At the Bersih demonstration this Saturday up to 20,000 Malaysians will come out to say it's time for a change.

No surprise. Difficult to find one's civil liberties in Asia based on many factors. You are very much discriminated in Malaysia if you are not Malay.
Add the insidious corruption and it becomes even more offensive.

According to a scientific research into the homoerotic response (measuring the hardening of penis) of homophobes, most homophobic people are homoerotic. If these protestors were naked we could have seen how true it is.

This is a serious matter.

is JMM, Who are the real supporters behind them.
Do not just blame Muslims. I am convinced that there must be political and religious conspiracy behind it.

Unbelieveable Government of Malaysia

Religion is the poison of the human spirit. (宗教是人类的精神毒药。)
Political accompanied with conspiracy。 (政治必定伴随着阴谋。)

Seriously, I think really should band political and religious in this planet。

#22, hmnaz, pl don't demean your otherwise sound comments by blaming 'dark--skinned' and therefore 'uneducated and lower class' people for the protest. If you would consider Singapore, its people (including, if you like, the colour of their skin) and their govt's policies toward GLBTs, you might see that your comment is a bit misguided ... putting it very mildly.

bersih, clean, peace, Holly. etc..whatever said by religion is camouflage.
will never accept any words from religion.

If They want to be Holly, just be Holly because LGBT will always give heart and mercy to religion as evils to be exist.
Why God afraid to Evils?
Even, if There are thousand Evil around God,
Evils win?
So, LGBT should let the evil around us.
