Two Men Caned for Gay Sex in Indonesia

Two men caned 83 times each in the Indonesian province of Aceh after being caught having sex.

Two men, aged 20 and 23, were caned in front of a jeering crowd in Indonesia’s Aceh province after they were caught having sex by vigilantes in March.

The punishment was delivered outside a mosque in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh with the crowd cheering as the caning took place.

"Let this be a lesson to you," one of the men watching cried out. "Do it harder," another man yelled, according to the BBC.

It is the first time gay men have been caned under Sharia law in the province, which allows up to 100 lashes for “morality” offences including homosexual sex, adultery, gambling, drinking alcohol, women who wear tight clothes and men who skip Friday prayers.

Human Rights Watch spoke out against the caning, saying the punishment constitutes torture under international law.

“These men had their privacy invaded in a frightening and humiliating manner and now face public torture for the 'crime' of their alleged sexual orientation,” said Phelim Kine, the group’s deputy Asia division director, according to The independent.

“The arrest and detention of these two men underscores the abuse imbedded in Aceh’s discriminatory, anti-LGBT ordinances.”

Ache is an extremely sharia province. Not been there. avoid going there

My thoughts also are with them. I hope it comes to them that they are not alone and that other people care for them.

I would hope that other governments and organizations would get the word out to boycott and shut down tourism and trade to the Indonesian province of Aceh. When you hurt them in their wallets only then will listen and make positive cultural changes. This obsolete and inhuman sharia extremist laws need to be condemned and abolished.

How they were caught? They do it openly? Police's spy them? A jealousy girl report to police?

The UN and the International Court should step up to the plate and bring charges to the animals who perpetrated this torture.

I guess the Aceh establisment must have missed the memo that THIS IS THE 21st CENTURY !
Total violation of Human Rights and what about the "peaceful" religion idea? What a bunch of hypocrits.
I've been to Aceh and was happy to leave. Not a place I feel comfortable with regardless of your orientation !

Another barbaric country... I agree with others that all other countries should condemn this act and boycott with sanctions this horrible backwards place... It is 2017 we dont live in the dark ages anymore.

Punishing people for loving ... what is next?
10. 2017-05-26 16:41
There is not much tourism in Aceh so a boycott will not hurt them. The situation in Indonesia becomes darker, and not only for gays (see the recent trial of the former governor of Jakarta). I feel there is little one can do from outside at the moment, except for moral support.

Barbaric.

Such a barbaric act conducted by the appalling state with Sharia law. I felt for these 2 men and families.

This is awful... but implore those there to get out/away if possible. Their society is not going to change any time soon. :-/

They should have know better. Should have done it in private not to get caught. Its a shame what happened will probably do it again if you love each other. Just be more careful where you do it.

It's heartbreaking that so many LGBTQ men and women around the world live in fear and are tortured for being who they are or even suspected.
17. 2017-05-27 23:27
14/15, why do you suggest they didn't do it in private? Does it feel good to lecture people who got publicly caned?
18. 2017-05-28 16:15
The fact that youtube shows the video should highlight the level of violence here.

They are being humiliated, yes. Beaten to death, no.

It's quite possible these are stooges that aren't gay at all.

You're entitled to be outraged however. Over what, I'm not sure.

"Sharia caning is much less severe as compared to judicial caning and is designed to humiliate the offender rather than to inflict physical pain. This form of caning is also practised in Indonesia's Aceh Province, where it is more common."

OK..... the UN should do something about this NOW.
But you know as well as l do the UN is about as affective in world matters as another hole in the head!!
The UN have the information AND the law behind them.
As mentioned in the above....Human Rights Watch spoke out against the caning, saying the punishment constitutes torture under "international law"

lets get rid of sharia medieval torture and public humiliation practices, its not the path to the future, only for the pleasure of sadistic minds, indonesia government has to act and respect people
21. 2017-05-28 22:50
HRW is as dangerous (if not more) than sharia law. Be very careful following its "findings".
22. 2017-05-28 23:48
Public canning in 21st century.. the President who is radical man Dodo is taking Indonesia back to old stone age. I agree to one of the writers that the government and states all over the world should boycott and put more pressure on tourism, economics and of course to bring the State to the International court of justice really or Human rights tribunal...

Along with the State, the head of the State should be tried in the court of justice in Hague...

No Matter how one looks at it Indonesia is definitely still in the Caveman Era.
So i suggest all Gay people not visit that Country at all its a Matter of Principle.
24. 2017-05-29 17:03
I'm sure they will miss the gay tourists. Boo Hoo.

I'd say, "think again," but you weren't thinking the first time.
