Chinese School Tells Students to 'Say No to Homosexuality'

A school in Hunan Province posted a homophobic message to a digital billboard.

A digital billboard in Xiangtan Technical Secondary School of Industry and Commerce in Hunan province displayed a notice saying "Say no to homosexuality, create a bright and harmonious campus," according to a photo posted to an LGBT Weibo account.
"The failure of sex education and backward ideas have resulted in the long-standing violence and discrimination against the gay community on campus," the Weibo account, Comrade's Voice, commented.  "But such flagrant homophobia from school officials is still rare."
The vocational school in Hunan province has more than 4,000 students and around 300 staff members, according to Sup China.
China only declassified homosexuality as a mental illness in 2001, and despite widespread conservatism a commentary in state-run People's Daily recently argued that homosexuality is not a mental illness.
The commentary quoted primary school text books that state: "It's personal choice as to whether you approve of homosexuality or not. But rationally speaking, it should be consensus that everyone should respect other people's sexual orientations."
