Hong Kong’s equality watchdog dismisses calls for legalising same-sex marriage

The equality watchdog dismissed calls for Hong Kong to follow Taiwan’s lead in legalising same-sex marriage

The equality watchdog dismissed calls for Hong Kong to follow Taiwan’s lead in legalising same-sex marriage - on the day (Friday 17 May) that had seen Taiwan become the first in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage.
At an evening of solidarity to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) in Hong Kong, activists called for similar rights in Hong Kong. However, Ricky Chu, head of the government equality watchdog the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), responded that ‘each society has its unique social circumstances’ and ‘we cannot directly compare Taiwan’s new law with Hong Kong’s situation’. He also urged LGBT rights campaigners to take things step-by-step to break an ‘eternal stalemate’.
