Malaysia appointment of trans woman as health consultant to help fight HIV/AIDS causes a stir

The appointment was made by Malaysia’s Ministry of Health.

Trans activist Rania Zara Medina will represent the Malaysian trans community in the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM). She will serve a two-year mandate, covering 2019-2021, to assist Malaysia’s fight against HIV/AIDS.

CMMs are national committees that submit funding applications to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on behalf of an entire country. CMMs include representatives from government, the private sector, technical partners, civil society and communities living with the diseases. Ever since its inception in 2009, Malaysia’s CMM has sought to tackle HIV/AIDS. It has been reported that as of 2016, 99,338 HIV+ men and 12,578 HIV+ women were living in Malaysia.
