National Treasure

Director: Jon Turteltaub

Starring: Nicholas Cage, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean

Screening: 2004-12-07

It's hard to figure out what goes on in Nicolas Cage's head. Sometimes,
he makes wonderful movies like Moonstruck, Eternal
Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
and Adaptation, earning
our respect with his nuanced acting.

Other times, he takes on roles in really dumb, bloated action movies
like Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), The Rock (1996)
and now, National Treasure — where he doesn't do
very much besides say his lines and jump off or run away from an
explosion.

Here, he plays a treasure hunter who suspects that the Founding
Fathers of America had inscribed on the back of the Declaration
of Independence document — in invisible ink, no less —
a treasure map pointing to hidden gold. He steals the parchment
and sets off on a silly adventure, filled with illogical clues and
outrageous settings.

Watch this only if your idea of a great film is, well, Gone
in 60 Seconds
and The Rock. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer,
of Pearl Harbour infamy — so go figure.
