The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

Director: Stephen Hillenburg

Starring: Alec Baldwin, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Scarlet Johansson

Screening: 2005-03-15

If you've never met SpongeBob before, here's a quickie introduction:
He's a cute, not-too-bright, yellow sea sponge boy that lives under
the sea on the Nickelodeon cable channel since 1999.

He loves to make campy jokes, sing girly songs and say dumb things.
He's incredibly popular among American gays who love the fact that
he's not afraid to hold his best friend's hand, be very flamboyant,
or wear tightly-stretched underpants that threaten to burst at any
moment. (In case you're wondering, he's also popular among children
as well as straight adults — as evidenced by the TV show's
high ratings.)

Making his movie screen debut, our yellow friend doesn't disappoint.
Whereas TV shows that cross over onto the big screen aren't always
successful — think X-Files: The Movie, Ali G
and Beavis And Butthead Do AmericaThe SpongeBob
Squarepants Movie
gets its mix of fun, frivolity and family
entertainment just right.

In the movie, young SpongeBob wants to prove that he's old enough
and smart enough to be the manager of a new fast-food joint. Thus,
when a precious crown is stolen, SpongeBob and his buddy Patrick
the starfish decides to try and prove their "manliness" by going
after the thieves themselves.

Expect many campy jokes (for instance, SpongeBob cleans himself
by swallowing a soap and squeezing the soap suds out of himself)
and some deliciously corny ones as well.
