Spanglish

Director: James L Brooks

Starring: Adam Sandler, Paz Vega, Tea Leoni

Screening: 2005-03-29

The name "James L. Brooks" may not immediately ring a bell with
movie audiences, but he is the writer-director of Oscar-winning
crowd-pleasing films like Terms Of Endearment, As Good
As It Gets
and Broadcast News. He is also the co-creator
of hit TV series such as Taxi, The Mary Tyler Moore
Show
, The Tracy Ullman Show and The Simpsons.

Those in-the-know have eagerly anticipated the arrival of his new
film, Spanglish, only to feel disappointed by his worst
film ever.

Spanglish is about an American family who hires a Mexican
maid who speaks very little English. Gradually, the Americans (Adam
Sandler as the man of the house, Tea Leoni as the wife, and their
kids) and the Mexicans (Paz and her daughter) learn more about each
other's cultures and languages.

Unfortunately, the movie is incredibly maudlin and manipulative.
It's hard to get into the story because the characters are so superficial
and caricaturish. And although it contains serious issues such class
and racial differences, these are explored with about as much depth
as Hallmark greeting cards.

In simple English, skip this.
