The 40-Year-Old Virgin

Director: Judd Apatow

Starring: Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd

Screening: 2005-10-04

If you:

1) hate slow-paced art films like Everlasting Regret and
The Bow;

2) hate gorgeous actors (like the cast of Into the Blue)
because they make you feel insecure about your body;

3) looove comedies with cheap jokes, then we strongly recommend
The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Indeed, some of you might conclude
that this is the best movie of the week.

Steve Carrell plays the titular character Andy, a friendly nerd
who's never had sex before. Because of some weird teenage incident
that scared him off sex, he has managed to turn 40 without even
knowing the touch of a woman. Enter Catherine Keener, a jaded divorcee
who's been hurt too many times and looking for something else. Sparks
ensue..

Like Into the Blue, you need to keep your expectations low
in order to enjoy this one, for there cheap and dirty jokes come
fast and furious. That said, there are also some simple and unexpected
pleasures along the way. The characters, for instance, seem like
genuine people — and that's a lot more than we can say about
the cardboard cut-ups of Into the Blue. The relationship
between Steve and Catherine is also truly sweet and touching —
one of the sweetest in recent movie memory.

Anyone looking for a good laugh won't regret spending their hard-earned
dollars on this one.
