By now, serious movie buffs have become familiar with the name Wes Anderson.
The offbeat 38-year-old filmmaker came to prominence with his delightfully quirky coming-of-age 1998 comedy Rushmore. He went on to direct two more unusual comedies, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steven Zissou with terrific casts that included Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelica Huston and Bill Murray.
Now he's teamed up some of our generation's brightest talents Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson for a whimsical, magical comedy about three brothers who take a train trip in India to search for their mother. Along the way, the brothers resolve their sibling rivalry and come to terms with their father's death.
Funny, enigmatic and poignant all at once, The Darjeeling Limited sees Wes Anderson once again employing his signature deadpan humour and stylishly self-conscious cinematography to examine the dynamics of family ties. And with the terrific chemistry between the three lead actors, Wes' eccentric vision comes to life, even more completely than in either The Royal Tenenbaums or The Life Aquatic with Steven Zissou.
(If you're unfamiliar with Wes' films, you might want to log on to iTunes and watch Wes' 13-minute filmlet Hotel Chevalier for free, which is meant as a prologue to The Darjeeling Limited.)
We absolutely loved this indie gem! And, if you have exquisite taste in films like we do, you would too.
