singapore marathon 2003 to raise $100,000 for action for AIDS

The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2003 and Action for AIDS needs your help to raise S$100,000 to fund AIDS education programmes for youths and to help with medication subsidies for patients.

Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2003 has adopted Action for AIDS (AfA) as the marathon's official charity. To be held on Sunday, December 7, this most anticipated annual running event aims to raise S$100,000 for the non-governmental and self-funded organisation.

The funds raised will go towards AIDS education programmes for youths and to help prevent the spread of the disease and to help with medication subsidies for patients.

Registered participants are provided pledge cards whereby they can donate/raise funds for the official charity. The staff of Standard Chartered and supporters of AFA are currently holding Four thousand pledge cards.

On the day of the event, the public can also make donations and/or play games at the carnival at the Padang where the end point carnival will be held. For every donation made, the public will receive a red ribbon, which they can pin onto a giant replica, which will be erected on the field. All funds raised will go to Action for Aids. A cheque will be presented to Action For Aids, at the end of the day.

Some 9,000 runners are expected to participate in this event which is sponsored by title sponsor Standard Chartered Singapore, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and the Singapore Amateur Athletics Association (SAAA).

As part of the its commitment to create awareness of the magnitude and impact of HIV/AIDS, educate staff in order to minimize and control the impact and to change risky behaviours, the Bank also runs a peer education programme called Living with HIV/AIDS for its staff.

The campaign is a peer education programme aimed at informing employees about the facts of HIV/AIDS, how it spreads, how it can prevented and how to care for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Local employee champions who are culturally sensitive implement he programme which is easy to implement and adapt to various communities. The Bank announced that the programme will be rolled out globally to all 28,000 employees in 54 countries by December 1, 2003.

Registration closes on November 16.
