Singapore National Library Board withdraws LGBT children's books

Two books for kids that feature LGBT characters and same-sex parenting have been banned from Singapore's public libraries after complaints from an anti-gay group.

A member of the anti-LGBT Facebook group, 'We are Against Pinkdot in Singapore', reportedly wrote to complain about two publications in the city's libraries, And Tango Makes Three and the White Swan Express.

And Tango Makes Three features a male penguin couple that adopt a baby penguin in a New York zoo, whilst the White Swan Express explores adoption by a number of people, including a lesbian couple.

In responding to the complaint by Teo Kai Loon, the chief librarian wrote the following response, that was posted on the 'We are Against Pinkdot in Singapore' Facebook page:

'Thank you for your email. I would like to assure you that NLB takes a strong pro-family stand in selecting books for children. We take a cautious approach in identifying titles for our young visitors. Besides going through the contents, we also refer to synopses, reviews and other books written by the authors.

'We have withdrawn the books Tango Makes Three and the White Swan Express following your feedback.'

Pink Dot festival in Singapore took place just two weeks ago in a celebration of freedom and diversity, despite opposition from a number of religious groups.

This is a shocking example of censorship, given that the collections of public libraries should represent a variety of viewpoints and the richness of life. When special interest groups gain control of what may or may not be found in public libraries, then no item is safe from potential challenge and removal. I find it very frustrating and disheartening that this could be happening in the 21st century.

Is she educated enough to know what pro-family means? Leadership means having the courage to be diplomatically correct. Is our national Chief Librarian saying LGBT people are aliens who don't have, cannot and incapable of being part of families and to retard our nation from what's realities outside the city state?? What kind of education is she intending to teach our nation then? She should be hauled for an intensive talk down by our Ministries in charge. Super bad PR and judgement call by NLB.

PS. Since the S'pore Ministry of Community and Information has stepped in support this terrible NLB decision and even allow the pulping of this title, LGBT is being looked upon as some kind of scums and vice. Right..

I am shocked about bowing to a complaint of this bigoted group. The censorship exercised is outrageous. Withdrawing the books means withdrawing from reality. A reality that hurts no-one! On the level of human rights, Singapore sinks deeper into the isolation amongst ASEAN countries all around.
So very sad.
