Elton John hints he may back LGBT equality fight in India

Comments made by the British pop star and LGBT advocate suggests decriminalising homosexuality in India is on his list humanitarian to-do list.

The Indian LGBT community’s fight to have the country’s controversial anti-gay law (Section 377) may be about to get a boost from one of the world’s greatest gay rights champions.

British singer and songwriter Elton John and his partner David Furnish have long been advocated for greater recognition of the LGBT community and have raised £350 million for the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In comments made to The Asian Age newspaper at 21st International AIDS conference in Durban on Wednesday, Sir Elton suggested that  the fight to repeal anti-gay laws in India was important to him. He told the newspaper that Section 377 made him “feel devastated.”

“India is definitely on our radar as one of the countries where we have to make LGBT feel more comfortable. We will fight for their rights, their health,” the superstar went on to say.

“We have been to India to look at what needs to be done… It’s a very difficult situation in India. Unfortunately LGBT has been losing ground. It’s something that we have to try and address and it’s not an easy situation but,” he added.

That dreadful legacy of our Victorian colonial days - Section 377 - also still stands in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and many other of our former colonies: it needs abolishing in ALL these countries too but religious factions, whether they be fundamentalist Hindu, Islam or Christian have too tight a grip on the politics of their respective countries to make reform happen.

Elton should try it in Bangladesh too. They are so backward and hostile there all they know is about killing gays. Shocking world we live in with backward cultures and religeons.
