Same-sex couple arrested over Facebook photo in Indonesia

Two men have been arrested under Indonesia’s anti-pornography law after uploading a photo of them kissing onto Facebook.

A 22-year-old student and 24-year-old office worker from the city of Manado, on central Sulawesi island, Indonesia were arrested after  after social media users complained about a picture of them kissing in bed, police said.
The unidentified couple could face jail time if they are found guilty under the country’s strict anti-pornography laws.
"The couple admitted it's them in the picture and they posted the picture to prove their love," local police spokesman Marzuki told AFP.
The picture, captioned “With my dear lover tonight. May our love last forever” was posted on Oct. 9 and went viral with a large number of angry responses.
It was later removed from Facebook after a request from the communications and information technology ministry, local media reported.
The identities of the two men have not been disclosed and although they are currently not in police custody they could be jailed if they are found guilty.

Manado is in a predominantly christian part of Indo. So the anti-gay sentiment is pervasive in the country. I won't be going to Bali any time soon.

So the same would happen for straights. No homophobia here.

"Prior to the recent wave of intolerance, members of the gay community had been able to quietly get on with their lives.

Activists believe the backlash was triggered by widespread coverage of the legalisation of same-sex marriage in the United States last year."

I bet the "activists" shoulder no blame. Why can't they "get active" and get elected?

Indonesia, is longer in my bucket list. I've seen Bali few years ago and liked it. Arrested (adults) over a kiss on social media, we are in 2016, wake up Indonesia.

So very sad to hear of this in 2016. You'd think the country was a bit more progressive than this! I won't be going there anytime soon either… They won't see my tourist dollars at all….

Thank God I live in the states where we can be as we wish.

Yes i agree in boycotting travel to Indonesia. its not about tourist money here.
Its about principle for any gender to have freedom to show affection such as kissing in any place.

Just to clarify kissing on the lips in any dwelling or on tv, or outside in public etc etc.

I am 73 and been married for 11 years . I guess my planned trip to a country that is so narrow minded is now off the table. I hope that the tourist industry suffers big time to help repay close minded elected officials. Please change you minds before you act as it is just not in any ones best interest like this.

sad misuse of religious sensibilities.... shame shame shame on those pursuing this nonsense....show what they truly are.... frightened little men with no depth or understanding...

Indonesian ignorance knows no bounds. A kiss is an expression of love for another human being not pornography. They probably go around happily shooting people but ban a kiss.
