Tasmanian MPs back conversion-practices bill at second reading

The House of Assembly voted 22–10 to advance the Greens proposal. Detailed committee debate is continuing; the bill is not law.

Tasmania’s House of Assembly voted 22–10 on 28 October to back a ban on conversion practices at its second reading, moving the Greens bill into detailed committee consideration.

Parliament’s live proceedings guide records the result and says debate in the Committee of the whole House is continuing. The bill has further parliamentary stages ahead and is not law.

Earlier, MPs rejected a motion by independent George Razay to send the bill to a select committee for an inquiry and report by 5 March 2027. That division was 11 in favour and 21 against the referral.

The proposal seeks to prohibit practices intended to change, suppress or eradicate someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Its scope has been central to the debate, with amendments being considered.

The vote follows an appeal from 28 parents of transgender and gender-diverse children, reported by ABC on 27 October. They urged MPs to support the bill, with concerns including the prospect of gender identity being removed from its protections. Fridae’s earlier report covers their letter and the distinctions in the introduced proposal.
