Joseph Fiennes plays Martin Luther,
whose bold actions foster an era of personal and religious freedoms
unprecedented in history.
Young law student Luther abruptly enters a monastery when he believes
his life is spared during a violent lightning storm, and turns to
a spiritual mentor, Father Johann von Staupitz.
In the holy city, Luther faces anger from the Pope, trial by Inquisition
and likely death — for his heretical writings and controversial
ideas. The stage is set for confrontation and the rise of the "Protestant"
movement.
