Samara

Director: Hideo Nakata

Starring: Naomi Watts, Simon Baker, David Dorfman, Sissy Spacek

Screening: 2005-04-05

The honey-skinned and heart-shaped-lipped Naomi Watts set many
dykes' hearts aflutter when she kissed Laura Harring in Mulholland
Drive
.

Now, she is all set to jolt you out of your seats and rattle your
cage in Samara, the sequel to The Ring (2002)
that was remade from Hideo Nakata's hit Japanese horror franchise
Ringu.

Naomi plays the single mother of a boy who has watched a haunted
videotape of the dead girl in a well. Fearing for the life of her
son, she moves away from Seattle to start a quiet new life in Astoria,
Oregon. But Samara, the dead girl in the tape, is determined to
follow the boy wherever he goes.

While The Ring was directed by Hollywood veteran Gore
Verbinski, Hollywood has smartly hired Hideo to direct the sequel
himself — with the help of English translators.

Thus, Samara boasts some subtle and creepy tactics that
Japanese horror maestros like Hideo and Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On)
are known for, as well as some unsubtle in-your-face special effects
that Hollywood is infamous for. All in all, however, Samara
is slick and worthy sequel to The Ring, and is bound to
make your skin crawl now and then.
