Corpse Bride

Director: Tim Burton

Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson

Screening: 2005-09-27

We've always adored writer-director Tim Burton for his wonderfully
dark and macabre imagination. And indeed, he is much better at making
up creepy graveyard tales (Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow)
than stories that are shot in daylight (Big Fish, Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory
). It is no surprise then that he is
thoroughly at home in his new animation, Corpse Bride.

It tells the wickedly strange tale of a man (voice of Johnny Depp)
who's about to be married to a sweet young woman (voice of Emily
Watson). Just before the wedding, the nervous young lad decides
to rehearse his wedding vows at a cemetery. Unwittingly, he finds
himself married to a dead woman (Helena) instead?

Taking us on a weird journey into the land of the dead, Tim impresses
with his uncompromisingly dark vision and humour. You can expect
sick jokes about missing limbs and rotting flesh, as well as poignant
reflections on death.

This animation may be filled with skeletons and zombies. But it
has more heart and soul than most movies about the living.
