The Wig

Original Title: Gabal

Director: Won Shin-Yun

Language: Korean with English subtitles

Starring: Chae Min-Seo, Yu Seon

Screening: 2005-10-11

In the hands of any gay director, a film titled The Wig
would be a campy cross-dressing musical. We're guessing, however,
that director Won Sin-yeon is straight because this particular Wig
is a dead serious Korean horror film.

It stars Yu Son and Chae Min-so as a pair of tragic sisters. One
of them has leukemia and may die in a matter of months. When the
sick sister loses her hair because of her medication, the healthy
sister buys her a wig to cover her bald head. Inexplicably, the
sick sister starts to get stronger and healthier.

What could possibly be giving the sick girl a new lease of life?
Is it?is it?The Wig? You don't say?

The Wig is an average horror flick that uses some very old
tricks to scare audiences. Director Won is often good at building
up suspense, but he fails to follow that up with a genuine fright.
In short: Good set-ups, bad pay-offs.

About the only reason to catch it is the gay subplot that unfolds
towards the end of the picture.
