Dorm

Director: Songyos Sugmakanan

Language: Thai with English subtitles

Starring: Jintara Sukapat, Charlie Trairat, Sirarath Jianthavorn

Screening: 2006-03-14

This horror film from Thailand was a big hit in its home country.
But critically speaking, Dorm is not nearly as slick, well-made
and scary as Thailand's previous horror blockbusters, Nang Nak
(1999) and Shutter (2004).

Produced by the same folks behind Shutter, and directed
by Songyos Sugmakanan, one of the directors of the charming kids?
movie My Girl (Fan Chan), Dorm tells the story
of a young boy Chatree who is sent away to boarding school by his
parents. He befriends a ragtag band of boys who like to stay up
late and tell ghost stories. One of the boys claims that the toilet
is haunted. One night, unable to contain his urge to pee, Chatree
goes to the toilet alone.

Dorm does begin with a few good scares, but the film gradually
develops into a mushy and slow-paced melodrama about Chatree and
his friendship with another boy. Keep your expectations very low
if you want to watch this film, and you may just walk out the cinema
not feeling like you wasted $9.
