Second Round wins Women Make Waves audience award

Chen Kuan-chun’s documentary follows Birdy, a trans man in Taiwan. The director has described choosing one person’s story and respecting the limits he set on filming.

Second Round, Chen Kuan-chun’s documentary about a trans man in Taiwan, has won the audience award at Women Make Waves. The festival says Chen and the film’s protagonist, Birdy, accepted the award at its closing ceremony on 25 October.

The 75-minute film, titled 一生二命 in Chinese, also won Best Film at the Taoyuan Film Festival on 24 August.

In an interview published by Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute’s Funscreen on 25 August, Chen explained why she concentrated on one protagonist. Gathering different people together simply because they were trans men risked turning the film into an explanation of an identity. She wanted audiences to get to know a person.

Chen also described asking what she could film. When Birdy declined to have a move filmed, she did not film it.
