Transsexual on Thailand's Got Talent show wows judges and viewers

A contestant on last weekend's Thailand's Got Talent show got the judges' approval and the audience cheering; and made fans of viewers around the world.

Nantita Khumpiramon (also known as Bell Nuntita), said to be a 27-year-old transsexual woman, wowed judges and the audience in the second episode of Thailand's Got Talent Season 1 which was aired on Sunday, 13 March 2011.

Nantita Khumpiramon got three 'yeses' from the judges on Thailand's Got Talent.

Her YouTube videos, which have been linked by Yahoo Music and international LGBT-interest blogs, have attracted more than 50,000 views since Sunday.

Nantita stunned the judges and the audience when she switched to a deep masculine voice after singing the first verse in a delicate feminine voice.

Impressed by her performance, Nirut Sirijanya, one of the three judges said: "You've deceived me since we first met. It’s impossible."

Pornchita ‘Benz’ Na Songkhla, who's the only female judge of the three, turned around and asked the audience: "Isn't she beautiful?" She added that she was stunned when she started the second verse.

The third judge Pinyo Rutham said although he initally thought that she might be transexual, he dismissed his suspicion when he first heard her sing until she switched to a deep masculine voice.

Nantita got three 'yeses' from the judges.

She was quoted as saying in an interview after her performance: "[Kids] always made fun of me... But what could I possibly do? And my dad never accepted me for who I am. The worst, he once beat me badly. He tried to beat me until I quit being transgender.

"I want to tell my dad, I love you and I finally made it now."

The English translations are based on the subtitles in the video. If readers can provide a more accurate translation, please do so in the comments section below.

people in thailand need stop watching all those crap tv programs like this, The Star, AF, etc.

superstars don't come from all those stages. They shine and are discovered.
24. 2011-03-17 12:25
I am so glad that this story happened in 2011... seemed like more and more gay and lesbian people being accepted of who we are compared to last decades..any where in any societies as the talent show here has defined a place for us with pride and non discrimination.. we are all proud being gay and we just like the rest of everyone in this plannet.... Go Nantita..

38. 2011-03-18 03:27
incredible. = )
39. 2011-03-18 04:28
I first saw her this evening on a Dutch TV Show (De Wereld Draait Door), she's gonna be famous! Incredible performance.
Yes i cried.
40. 2011-03-18 07:44
I cried too - and I've always thought Thai pop music rather bland and boring.

Beautiful presentation, both physical and vocal. A star in the making, I hope.

@32 - yep, I also agree about the guy in the blue shirt *lol*
41. 2011-03-18 08:57
She is pretty. She is brave. I think that she should stick with the feminine voice. It is just my 2 cents.
42. 2011-03-18 09:09
Hi Bell , whatever that makes you happy - Go for it. I am happy for you. You are already a star in your own right.

Keep on singing and be happy. Do not let all the negative vibes around you affect you. Life is a journey , just enjoy the ride. In all rides there are bound to be bumps and jerks. Cheers !!
43. 2011-03-18 09:15
she's a bad ass, more power to her
44. 2011-03-18 09:50
her story is a powerful one. hope she puts it to good use n empower people who can relate to her story :) we're all behind u girl :)
45. 2011-03-18 11:04
She's beautiful and a great voice.
#16 & #17...she's a 'she'.
46. 2011-03-18 11:18
She proved that being transgender doesn't necessary always end up as prostitutes and showgirls. Her down to earth appearance gain herself respect. Her natural non-acting manners give her dignity, making us accept her for who she really is (instead of acting). Couragous and inspiring !!!
47. 2011-03-18 14:32
im a fan alreadyyy! :) :) its a very moving performance i got me teary eyes :)
48. 2011-03-18 15:33
"She was quoted as saying in an interview after her performance: "[Kids] always made fun of me... But what could I possibly do? And my dad never accepted me for who I am. The worst, he once beat me badly. He tried to beat me until I quit being 'gay'."

above was what the writer wrote...
but what i watched in her/his video, she/he clearly said:
"He tried to beat me until I quit being 'TRANSSEXUAL'."
she/he never use word "GAY"
i wonder who the writer is, is he/she kind of moron????? SHAME ON U!!!
GAY IS NOT TRANSSEXUAL!!!!!
here i STRONGLY protest to fridae webmaster, how come this shameful thing could happen here???

Fridae editor: Thank you for the correction. As stated in the article, what was quoted was based on the subtitles in the video, and that we would appreciate if Thai-speaking members inform us if there are errors. We have corrected the article.

To MichaelAsia poster # 34 "Another trannie Thai singer"

It is saddens me that even within our own community there is still intolerance.

Bell is beautiful inside and out. You are neither!
59. 2011-06-17 00:01
Nice got shock too when she 'changed' her voice.

So brave of her...
