Gay apps blocked by Samsung, Google in South Korea

In South Korea, home to phone giant Samsung, gay social apps are being blocked on online stores due to 'moral concerns.'

A shared memo from Samsung to Sean Howell, CEO of Hornet, has highlighted the blocking of gay social apps in South Korea.

Hornet's application was blocked because “due to the local moral values or laws, content containing LGBT [subject matter] is not allowed.”

In fact, Samsung offers no LGBT dating apps in its store, anywhere in the world.

In South Korea, however, Jack'd is even blocked on Google Play. Other well-known LGBT apps are still available through Apple iOS, but the country has far less Apple users than Samsung.

Although homosexuality is not illegal in Korea, the country's Standards Commission has decided that LGBT material “is automatically identified as material harmful to youth,” according to civil-rights lawyer Park Kyung-sin.

LGBT campaigners face fierce opposition from traditional attitudes and from conservative Christian groups and had to enter a legal battle to conduct this year's pride march.

The country’s new justice minister, Kim Hyun-woong, recently called for restrictions against a pride march that has been held for in Seoul for over fifteen years, according to Pink News.

“It does not go by our society’s traditional values or norms, therefore I believe there should be restrictions against it,” he said.

What is this 'moral concerns' or 'material harmful to youth' about?

In fact, it is so immoral to block the 'basic livelihood' of minority people...

Can't the youth have the opportunity or exposure to learn to be themselves if they are born as gay?

The gay youth are already having so much disadvantages such as born into a 'straight' family, growing-up in a 'straight' society and environment, educated in 'straight' schools, having limited chances of knowing other gay people, are among countless of disadvantages of basic livelihood and human rights problems which they are facing everyday...

This is Korea home to one of the most technologically savvy people in the world. They will just use a VPN or side load it onto their devices.

I feel ashamed to own or use anything Samsung now. Such a stupid move, especially given that gay sex is not even illegal.

Gay men are deluded if they think most gay related apps aren't to do with random sexual meetings.

If people want sex, they will find it. To be brain washed into thinking life is all about sexuality has to be a bad thing.

S Korea will catch up to western values soon enough

As a senior citizen of Canada, I urge all peoples of the world to boycott any Samsung product. The impact to their bottom line may be small, but a few missed purchases by many may be enough to show that to be bigots by big business leaders is not acceptable.
Canada has accepted Gays as being equals for over 10 years. SAMSUNG, get with the 21st century . I did .

johnl, so the fact that samsung would decide not to host random shag apps on their own site offends you? This appears to be both gay and straight apps. Plus they dont do this in the uk so its a localised issue.

Has canada accepted shagging around to be a good thing? Putting those lies on kids cant be easy. or do they tell them?

the bottom line is that we all have choice. go ahead, boycott them. Maybe a good idea to know why you are boycotting something tho and, of course, if the facts match what you think. Or..... just be prejudiced that way you can be a hypocrit at the same time :)

Change takes time .....

It's up to samsung to do what they like.

Journalists don't have to bother to check the facts.

People commenting don't have to bother with good English.

I'm very happy with all my Samsung products. Their customer care in the UK was a bit crap over one issue I had but in the end it got sorted with compensation.

They don't have tindr in s korea but they do have a gay in the UK.

jonhl,

GTiLad does not use his real identity here...

He is an anti-gay spy or undercover agent sent by the authorities to mess up our pro-gay conversations here...

Lol

Who does use their real identity on here? Do you want my credit card number mr mmmem?

I'm certainly an under cover agent. Sex behind closed doors!!!! What a strange one I am not hanging around public toilets.

I feel so distanced and removed from the lefty lgbt rights cause at any cost even if they hurt others and actual set them against gay people. I'm so so glad about that.

Nasty left wing gays :-(. So obviously affected by their sexuality.

Hopefully they will wake up to themselves and live their lives rather than having such large chips on their shoulders.

Lets all clam down and bit nice shall we?

What are the facts?

Is Samsung blocking gay apps, as stated in the headline, because they are for us LGBT community, or for some other reason. For example, if they blocked all apps, of any sexual preference, if those apps defy some common sense or justifiable moral reason ... I don't know the facts.

Truth be told, it isn't only samsung, it's the entire Korean society. Where else do you have parents rewarding their own kids with plastic surgery as graduation gifts? The recent spate of scandals involving fake / doctored qualifications of so-called 'professionals', notwithstanding 'research scientist' Hwang Woo Suk does make one wonder...did the management board @ samsung double-check for charlatans before welcoming their candidates on board???

P.S- i'm well aware there will be pc and corporate nazis reporting my post. All I can say is: truth is like oil in water...no matter how much (or how hard) you work to suppress it, it always floats on top! Hwang Woo Suk is the perfect example...there will be many more to come. ;)
