Indonesia psychiatrists label homosexuality, bisexuality and transgender as mental disorders

Indonesia’s leading psychiatric body says that LGBT can be cured through proper treatment.

The Indonesian Psychiatrists Association (PDSKJI) has said that such ‘sexual tendencies’ are triggered by external factors and can be healed through psychiatric treatment.

PDSKJI member Suzy Yusna Dewi talked to the Jakarta Post to address the country’s rising concerns on the growing prominence of the LGBT community.

"We really do care about them. What we are worried about is, if left untreated, such sexual tendencies could become a commonly accepted condition in society," Dewi said.

Dewi referred to Law No.18/2014 on Mental Health and said that the PDSKJI considers transgenders as having a mental disorder, meaning they have physical symptoms and behaviour issues that affect their welfare. Homosexuals and bisexuals are considered as having psychiatric problems, meaning they are at risk of developing a mental disorder.

The PDSKJI said that there was not evidence that sexuality was caused by biological factors and that sexual appetite was similar in nature to drug addiction.

According to Dewi, intervention is the best way to combat sexuality and efforts should be made to limit ‘inappropriate’ sexual behaviour.

“Without constant intervention, a person can easily return to their previous sexual tendency once he or she experiences withdrawal,” Dewi said.

She stressed the importance of upholding national values and norms. “We must respect Indonesian traditions, which culturally do not accept same-sex marriage, and we should not bow to the influence of foreign values that may not fit in with our values.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of psychiatric disorders in 1990.

She knows nothing of Indonesian traditions then. The religious teacher who took boys to be their "wives" in Central Java. The practice continued till only a few decades ago, and I am sure it must continue out of sight to this day.
Have a so called medical professional bend her training and outlook just to accommodate an outdated religious view, cancels any standing she may have in the medical profession. I am sure she would be laughed out of any international medical forums, if she dared to attend.

Well I think the Indonesian government, power brokers, and the rest of the uneducated mental midgets that are buying into this outrageous anti LGBT behavior needs to be treated. I hear electro shocking does wonders! Let us prescribe the treatment to all these idiots and see which ones decide that LGBT behavior is ok. What a bunch of wankers! May the gods forgiven them on earth because in the afterlife they are going to get theirs!

Pity that Indonesia is still in the dark ages.
Why is it they think that they hold the high moral ground and need to protect so called national values and norms?
They are not dissimilar to the Churches in wielding their power, who for centuries have persecuted minority groups and at the same time failed to stop their priests and brothers from raping and destroying children's lives. I am unsure of where their moral values and teachings were at that time! I think that their pedestals have well and truly crumbled to dust and certainly noted in the West.
Clearly the government and the people with influence need to be educated and taught that there is no danger to their "values" by accepting the LGBT community. They will find that most of us have similar goals and values and are of no danger to them at all.
It's time to take religion out of state and promote governments that governs equally for all without prejudice or fear.

Thanks Indonesia for alerting me to the fact that I have a mental disorder. I didn't realize because the rest of the world seems to disagree but of course the Indonesian psychiatric association is well known for its superior insights informed not by medical science but by nationalist ideology as it no doubt ought to be. How medieval. I won't be visiting Indonesia anytime soon.
