Long-awaited anti-discrimination bill flounders in Senate of the Philippines

It was first drafted 19 years ago and first filed to the Senate in 2016.

Long-awaited anti-discrimination legislation has floundered after lawmakers failed to tackle the bill in this session of the Senate of the Philippines. The bill, which would outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression (SOGIE), has become one of the slowest-moving bills in the country’s history. ‘Should we still debate about something as basic as equality? For three years? Really?’ The bill’s sponsor, Senator Risa Hontiveros, said according to CNN.

Hontiveros filed the bill in 2016. But, lawmakers and rights activist originally drafted the law nearly 20 years ago. The House of Representatives passed the bill in 2017 with unanimous support from 198 lawmakers. This version penalises discriminatory acts with a fine between US$2,000 and US$10,000 or imprisonment between one and six years.
But, conservative lawmakers, including anti-LGBT boxer Manny Pacquiao, have stalled it in the Senate.

Filipinos are still way behind the times, honey; it truly is a shame. They need to educate themselves and realize that being gay isn't a bad thing. But no, monkeys always wanna play games on the subject, then ridicule and clown you in public when you're gay. They can't seem to get that shit outta their heads.

"monkeys always wanna play games on the subject, then ridicule and clown you in public when you're gay. They can't seem to get that shit outta their heads."

That is racist, rude in the extreme and totally uncalled for.
