Very few leading lawmakers in Japan support same-sex marriage

Only 9% of the notoriously anti-LGBT Liberal Democratic Party candidates standing in upcoming elections said they backed equal marriage.

A survey by a newspaper in Japan has revealed just how few ruling-party lawmakers in Japan support equal marriage. Only 9% of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidates in upcoming Upper House elections said they would support same-sex marriage.

Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun asked Upper House candidates from all parties to choose one of five options on same-sex marriages: ‘support,’ ‘support if I have to choose,’ ‘oppose,’ ‘oppose if I have to choose’ and ‘I cannot decide.’ 36% of the LDP candidates said they opposed same-sex marriages or opposed them if they had to choose and only 9% supported same-sex marriages or supported them if they had to choose. However, 55% answered that they could not decide.

Japan does not currently allow same-sex marriage and its laws do not protect LGBT people from discrimination.

@botwildfck - what on earth are you talking about? "case of man and woman marriage without agreement of authority, their marriage kept happened." The whole post is a jumbled load of nonsense, typical of most of your comments unfortunately.

He was probably still referring to Sirri marriage. But it does not include same-sex ones, right? @botwildfck

Sirri marriage in Japan? Where on earth would he get that idea? Japan has a tiny population of Muslims. Japanese men with mistresses is far from uncommon but I believe sirri marriage would be illegal.

He has merely repeated a nonsensical post from another thread.

@osongbosong - "i would think the Japanese would be more westernized and modernized than this"

Oh really? Why? What makes you think the Japanese should be anything other than Japanese? Because they were conquered by the Americans in World War 2? You clearly sit in your Californian hideaway understanding little of this country I love and where I worked for several years. Come to think of it, you know little at all about Asia other than The Philippines - which you hate and loathe. That must be it. You project that hate and loathing on to all Asian nations. Thank goodness the Japanese are not more western. The West could learn quite a bit from Japan.

As for the comment "too much sushi and sake can damage your mind", you must be out of your mind making statements like that. How ridiculous! Hundreds of millions around the world love sushi and sake.
