Following Pope Francis’ recently voiced support for same-sex civil unions, Senator Maria Josefa Imelda “Imee” Marcos called on her colleagues to act on her proposal seeking to recognise the right of same-sex couples to co-own property.
Senator Marcos echoed the Pope in saying that same-sex couples have the right to have a family and to enjoy the benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples. She also said that she hoped hearings on her Senate Bill No. 417 could now be progressed. The Bill proposes to recognise civil unions to give same-sex couples ‘rights and obligations’ in a long-term partnership.
Senator Marcos is the daughter of former President Ferdinand Marcos and former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

I hope she gets it done, it is way overdue! Because of the Philippines being a predominant catholic society, what the Pope is advocating regarding civil unions for same-sex couples, packs a lot of weight. Hopefully, it's enough weight to change the minds in power to pass laws to protect the rights and give well-deserved benefits to the LGBTQ community in the Philippines.
