Johnny To is undoubtedly one of the finest directors working in
Hong Kong today. His action films like The Mission and
Breaking News rival the best Hong Kong has to offer. And
his latest film Election leads this year's Golden Horse
Awards with the most number of nominations (11 altogether), including
Best Film and Best Director.
Election stars Tony Leung Ka Fai (nominated for Best Actor)
and Simon Yam as two triad bosses who both want to get ahead in
their organization. When the elders display their preference for
Simon to take on the top post of chairman, the hot-tempered Tony
becomes insanely jealous.
Don't expect a lot of action and violence in this movie. Director
Johnny To isn't trying to be John Woo — he is less interested
in hyperbolic shootouts with high body counts here than in the complex
inner workings of a triad organization and the human drama of greed,
jealousy and ambition.
Tony delivers a fine performance, and it would be a crime if he
doesn't walk away with the Best Actor trophy.
