into the crystal ball

Ever wondered what your future holds for you in matters of the heart? Fridae's resident columnist, Fire, shares her thoughts on seeking psychic advice as well as the pros and cons of turning to fortune tellers for solutions to personal matters.

Everyone around me said that 2001 was a bad year for lovers. It wasn't the time to form new relationships and it was tagged as the break-up year by many psychics.

Do you believe in fortunes, tarot readings, runes, cards, destiny or fate? When you look into the crystal ball, what does it tell you? I enjoy having my fortune read but I've also learnt not to take it too seriously.

Some of us have had our fortunes read one way or another. A complete stranger who reads our palms will say many things to us. She will tell us what has passed, what is happening in the present and more crucially, what will come in the near or far future. The news may bring tidings of great and good fortune or grave misfortune and heartbreak.

It is through this medium that we are most excited to learn about our love life or future partner. We ask many questions like "Is she the one?" or "Will we break up?"

I do not always advocate superstition or the occult (especially if the fortune teller looks suspect) but I know a number of you out there are more or less curious and would like to try consulting someone well versed in that field.

Today, I just want to give suggestions on how not to jeopardize your relationship based on negative predictions by those gifted with the third eye.

There is nothing wrong with seeking professional psychic advice, what is wrong is how you act on what is told to you.

Before going to a psychic to ask about your present relationship, bear in mind that you will not always hear what you want to hear. You may be forewarned of some untoward incident your partner will be responsible for or be told that you may want to consider a better person who'll walk into your life very soon.

If this the case, know your facts and do not make rash decisions. Just because you are told that the relationship you're currently in won't last doesn't mean that you should break it off as soon as you get home. The possibility of having someone better may seem very attractive and I know some who had broken up with their partners because they believed that someone better was waiting when there wasn't anyone there.

Still, if the soothsayer seems to be correct, a current analysis of your relationship will help. What is happening now to your present relationship? Are you both threading on rocky ground? Are you becoming unhappy? Have you talked about your problems? Are your future plans clear? Do both of you see eye to eye when it comes to decisions about each other's future? Or is this prediction a hoax because you know that your relationship is working very well?
In case you have identified your problems or rather the premonition has identified them for you (as an eye opener maybe), that's when you start evaluating your options very seriously.

A psychic is there to provide options for you. A good psychic will never insist on her way or what she sees will happen. She will simply give you several suggestions and solutions to possible problems. A good psychic will also assure you that your future may change - after all, you make your future. Psychics simply tell you where your path will lead you at the moment you go to them for a reading.

Another instance is when the oracle gives readings about unfaithful partners. In this situation, you need not over react all at once. Cheating is a serious thing and to accuse someone of cheating based on a fortune tellers words can be very embarrassing if turns to be false. Again, find a way to verify this information without aggravating your lover.

One thing though, if you don't have a strong feeling that your partner is fooling around with someone else, don't confront her. I still think we should follow our gut feel more than someone else's, especially if they're talking about a present situation.

To be cautious of danger is very important. To be paranoid and to live a life based largely on your stars will limit your freedom to discover and explore.

After all, making your own decisions through your own judgment and evaluation of any situation is still the best exercise for developing independence and good judgment. Lead yourself through your future and be your own fortune teller.
