Kusakabe and Sajo sit in the same classroom and barely know each other. A school chorus rehearsal gives them a reason to talk in Doukyusei, Shoko Nakamura’s animated romance. The film returns to cinemas in Taiwan on 6 November for its tenth anniversary.
Kusakabe plays in a band. Sajo is a good student who struggles to sing in tune. Kusakabe offers to practise with him, giving them a reason to spend time together after school.
Nakamura’s film opened in Japan in 2016 and is based on Asumiko Nakamura’s manga. It runs just over an hour. What makes that rehearsal a good starting point for a romance is how little either boy has to explain. Kusakabe can help with a song. Sajo can agree to stay. Neither has to have a name for what might happen next.
Vieshow lists Japanese-language digital screenings at selected cinemas, including venues in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Choose a cinema on the Vieshow listing to see its showtimes.
