Second Tokyo ward to recognize same sex relationships

Tokyo's Setagaya Ward shows support of sexual minorities by recognizing same-sex relationships, although same-sex marriage remains illegal in Japan

Setagaya Ward in Tokyo has followed Shibuya Ward to support gay relationships by issuing certificates in recognition of relationships. It will introduce the certificates in November.

In March, Shibuya Ward adopted an ordinance to certify same-sex marriages as equivalent to legal marriages. The papers hope to eliminate discrimination against gay couples by hospitals and real estate firms.

In Setagaya, the certificates will be issued to same-sex couples aged 20 or older who confirm that they are in a partnership. Although same-sex marriage will remain illegal, it is hoped that the legislation will go some way to making sure same-sex couples are treated the same in the eyes of the law.

Applications include same-sex partners visiting each other in hospital or gaining a joint deed on a property.

And what about couples that aren't in a sexual relationship but dependant on one another?
