Taiwan Documentary Wins International LGBT FIlm Award

Taiwanese filmmaker Hui-chen Huang wins best documentary film at 2017 Teddy Awards.

Hui-chen Huang was awarded best documentary film at the 2017 Teddy Awards—the LGBT section of the Berlin Film Festival—for her portrait of her relationship with her lesbian mother.

The film is a rare portrayal of growing up with a gay parent and was also nominated for the best documentary and best editing award at Taiwan’s Golden Horse in 2016.

“We come from Taiwan, a small but beautiful island, which may soon become the first country in Asia with same-sex marriage this year. This award is the best gift for those who have been fighting for the marriage equality,” said director Huang in her acceptance speech.

After beginning documentary film making in 1998, Huang spent nearly 20 years to finish this letter from Huang to her mother, who was in a forced, abusive marriage and struggled with coming to terms with her sexuality.
