Taiwan becomes the first in Asia to create same-sex marriage bill

If the bill passes, same-sex couples will be able to wed, inherit and adopt.

Taiwan’s cabinet has issued its draft for the legislation, which will be voted on and most likely passed by parliament. The bill’s debate will likely start after 1 March and following a court order, it must be passed before the two-year deadline on 24 May. If it is not passed before then, it will automatically become law.
This is great news for Taiwan’s LGBT Community and let us hope that this may be the first of many in the region. Thailand’s Cabinet has already approved a Civil Partnership bill, but Taiwan’s draft legislation represents the first full marriage equality bill in the region.
